The Power Of Essential Oils

Our senses although scientific are in many ways magical and poetic to me. Within a few moments of burning some Sandalwood Essential Oils, my whole system is heightened, as the smell glides through the air the firing in my brain links to previous memories and feelings associated with this relaxing scent. So many of us indulge in different foods, different bedding, cushions, and music, by failing to recognize the full potential of our noses.  Essential oils have been used throughout history for many things included bactericidal, medicinal and cosmetic application. Nowadays they are often used within pharmaceutical, cosmetic and sanitary industries.  We can often form association connections within the brain when we familiarise a scent with a certain activity. A great way to use essential oils is by relaxing to one particular scent to form these associations and then using this scent in times of heightened stress or anxiety to help you elicit these more relaxing feelings. A fantastic way to use these oils is by applying them safely to lava stone jewelry, the lava stone soaks in the oil and allows you to carry the desired scent with you all day.   Essential Oils should always be used with caution, professionally and safely. Make sure you are aware of the different ways to use each essential oil safely. Read More

Burning Candles

In a similar way to essential oils, different scented candles can also be used to form associations. Candles come in many different scents, colors, and shapes so they are a fantastic way to decorate your space. Within certain beliefs, the burning of candles is believed to clear the air of negative energies and help prayers travel to higher realms.  A flame makes a fantastic focal point for meditation and relaxation, next time you burn a candle spend a few moments centering yourself and allowing your energies to be grounded.

Himalayan Salt Lamp

Himalayan salt lamps can be seen in many places and have been popularised due to the believed health benefits. So far it is thought that there have been no scientific studies to suggest that Himalayan salt lamps actually produce negative ions in any large qualities. However, these lamps are truly beautiful they are an amazing natural feature and also hygroscopic, this means that they draw in water to its surface and this is quickly evaporated into the air which can be good for you.

Try Using Crystals

Crystal has been used throughout ancient times and believed to have a number of different spiritual and practical uses. For example, Turquoise and Jasper can be seen throughout history in artwork, ruins, armor, and jewelry; they were often used and worn for wisdom and protection.  Crystal therapy and healing are becoming increasingly popular. The use of crystals, gemstones, and minerals from the earth is still vastly unknown however many believe that the vibrations from these crystals can be attuned to the body and we can use these inexhaustible sources of energy.

We believe that your intentions help to alter your psychological process, the plasticity of the brain and guide your decision making. Using crystals as a reminder of your intentions turns these valuable stones into a spiritual tool. You can use your intuition to guide yourself towards a particular crystal. Once you are familiar with the properties of your chosen crystal you can use it to:

  • lift your energies into alignment with the crystals
  • make decisions that are in line with these properties
  • remind you of your intentions

For example, Obsidian is often used for introspection, I may carry an obsidian with me or use it during meditation and during this time I would: align my energies with the obsidian and remind myself to look within rather than outwards, it would also be a great reminder throughout the day to assess my emotions and think about them before reacting.  You can use crystals in many ways by having them around the home, carrying them, meditating with them or wearing them in jewelry. Our energies can sometimes get a bit stagnant and it is believed that this happens to crystals as well.  Our energies can often become stagnant and so can crystals. If you are using crystals remember to cleanse and look after them as much as they look after you!  Click here for a few tips on how to cleanse crystals. Read More

Make Meditation Part Of Your Daily Routine

If you are a beginner with meditation or you find it hard to sit still and meditate, the following tips will help you to fall in love with meditation and make it a part of your daily routine:

Find A Meditation Practice That Suits YOU

If you are a beginner in meditation, sitting quietly for 20 minutes can feel like an eternity of boredom or back pain suffering session infused with all kinds of weird thoughts running through your head. Therefore, as someone who has been on a spiritual journey for ten years, I would recommend that you start meditating with guided meditations, mala meditation, or mindfulness meditation, as they are much easier, to begin with.  You can pick a guided meditation that resonates with you, for example, relaxing meditation, visualising meditation, manifesting meditation, intuitive guidance meditation, guided chakra healing meditation.

It is important that you keep on trying out different meditations until you find the ONE that truly resonates with you.

Mala meditations are a beautiful way to start meditating and fall in love with meditation practice.  You will need a necklace with 108 beads (mala) that you will use during the meditation in a way that while touching each bead of the mala you speak (chant) a mantra of your choice. You can practice a mindfulness meditation whenever you can get into a state of being fully present in the moment (like for example, watching a beautiful nature landscape, listening to the bird’s chirp, drinking a cup of warm tea, or looking at the candle flame).  You can wear jewellery pieces with different affirmations and zen messages to remind you to be more present during the day.  Once you get into the habit of sitting and taking some quiet time, calming your mind to focus on one thing, and being more present in the moment, it will be much easier for you to start practising silent meditation!

Create a Sacred Space For Meditation

When I travelled to India for the first time, I was surprised to see the sacred space for praying & meditation in every home.  Once I moved to India I realised how much difference it makes when you “enter” the space, dedicated only for this purpose.  Your subconscious mind immediately connects this space with a place for meditation and prayer and you instantly get into the “meditation mode”.  Focus during the meditation is much deeper, and you have everything that you need in one place – incense, books, candles, crystals, visual images or objects that help you to focus your mind on meditation, matchsticks, malas, bells, bowls, meditation cushions. Having a special place for praying and storing sacred books, objects, and anything that you associate with zen, spirituality, and Divine is also a huge benefit of having a sacred space.  Not to mention the energy vibes you can feel when you are sitting in a space surrounded by all of the spiritual, sacred, high vibe objects, spiritual books, sounds, candle flames, crystals, pilgrimage souvenirs … that you own!

Having a sacred space will help you to increase the motivation to meditate and also to be more focused during the meditation.

Incense

Incense has been used since ancient times for purifying the air, energy cleanse, and invoking different emotional and consciousness states.  Burning incense and inhaling particular scents during the meditation can help us to calm our mind, deepen our focus during the meditation, increase the receptivity of our consciousness for intuitive messages and guidance, and let go of negativity.  Burning dry sage, polo santo sticks, or incense made of sage, polo santo, or sandalwood before meditation helps in clearing the negative energy in the space. If you are meditating on particular chakras, you can burn incense related to that chakra to increase the effect of meditation (for example – sandalwood for root chakra, rose for heart chakra, or lavender for third eye chakra).  If you want to increase your intuition, calm down, and attain the state of deeper inner peace, burning lavender incense can help.

Crystals

Crystals like amethyst, clear quartz, moonstone, selenite, black obsidian, and lapis lazuli are believed to help attain higher consciousness states, increase intuition, and clearing the negative energy.  You can place your crystals in your sacred – meditation space, or meditate while holding them in your hand.

I like to rub the amethyst crystal on my third eye before the meditation or place it on the top of my head while meditating, and I also love using malas made of different crystals.  You can also wear crystals as a jewellery on your body while meditating or place chakra healing crystals for each chakra on your body while doing chakra healing meditation.

Meditation Cushions

Sitting comfortably during the meditation is a must thing when you are just beginning with your meditation practice.  A meditation cushion is worthy of the investment as it will help you to meditate for a longer time!  If you are a beginner with yoga and meditation practice, you may find it hard to sit with your back straight, which can cause the back pain during the meditation and discomfort that can distract you from deep relaxation while meditating.  In that case, meditate at a place where you can have back support (like wall, door, or bedside).

Sounds

If you are trying to practice silent meditation, listening to relaxing sounds of raindrops, ocean waves, birds chirping… or relaxing music in the background can help you to relax and be more present in the moment.  You can also use Tibetan bowl or bells before and after meditation to relax, or symbolically start and end your meditation practice.

Candles and Essential Oils

Staring at the candle flame is also one form of mindfulness meditation.  If you find it hard to inhale the smoke of incense then essential oils and scented candles can be a good replacement.  Lavender scent can help you relax, calm your mind, and focus better during the meditation.  If you are doing chakra healing meditation, you can burn candles of corresponding colours during the meditation, as well as essential oil with the corresponding scent.  Inhaling a few drops of lavender essential oil on the cotton pad can help you to calm down instantly if you are feeling stressed and get into meditative state faster.  Many of the spiritual teachers recommend meditating continuously for 21 or 40 days, in order to make meditation a daily habit.  Habits are formed from rituals, and rituals are formed by actions that we repeat constantly in a specific way.

Therefore, if you want to meditate daily and make it an effortless habit, just like brushing your teeth first thing when you get up in the morning, creating a meditation practice RITUAL can help you to make that happen faster.  Associating meditation with particular time of the day (for example morning), with particular place (“sacred” or “meditation” space, meditation cushion), particular scents (for example sage, lavender, sandalwood, polo santo…), particular sound (for example the sound of a Tibetan bowl or relaxing music or a mantra…) will help you to make a daily meditation practice a habit much faster.  You can create a small ritual that resonates with you around the meditation or includes meditation in your morning ritual, evening ritual before going to bed, or as a part of your daily spiritual practice.

Chakra Cleansing With Stones

hand, holding, chakra
namaste, yoga, meditation

Just as we clean our physical bodies with a bath or shower we should regularly clean our spiritual body by cleansing our Chakras. Having a blocked Chakra means that the energy is not flowing freely throughout your subtle body and this can have many consequences. Luckily it is not difficult t cleanse out Chakras and can be done fairly quickly with practice.  The Chakra stones are also known as healing stones and they contain different colours and vibrations. Every Chakra has a specific colour and a stone of the same colour can be used in Chakra healing.  Many coloured crystals can be used and depending on their specific qualities some stones may seem more effective for you than others. There are stones that work well to heal specific Chakras and those that can heal multiple Chakras and enhance other stones. Before doing any spiritual practice or opening up your Chakra we recommend getting comfy and making sure you are relaxed. Feel safe in your environment and visualize yourself surrounded by bright white light. This light will protect you and keep you safe throughout.  To cleanse our Chakras crystals are often placed on the body in the Chakras corresponding position. Before placing the crystals on the body, a pendulum can be used to shift energies and clear any energies that may be blocking the Chakras. The pendulum used should be clear or white such as Clear Quartz, Opalite, Selenite or Calcite.

I personally recommend the use of a Clear Quartz Pendulum as it’s colourless appearance brings clarity and serenity. This stone is particularly useful as it amplifies the energies of other stones. Clear Quartz is thought to shift energy and release blocked emotions, making it perfect for clearing energies within each of the Chakras. Next you will need a crystal to place on each of the Chakras. It really doesn’t matter if this is a tumbled stone, raw mineral, wand, or pyramid. We recommend using a crystal that matches the colour of the Chakra, however, in a pinch, clear Quartz is a great substitute for any stone because it contains all the colours within it, and it’s a fantastic energetic amplifier and master healer.  It is important to remember there are no rules. Experiment with your crystals and work with whichever mineral you feel resonates best with your body. Honour your body and do what feels right. Even if a crystal colour does not match the Chakra colour it may be the specific qualities and energies your Chakra needs.  Crystals possess the highest vibration frequencies on earth and being around crystals can have profound effects on your health. Each crystal has its own unique energetic properties and can be used strategically to enhance sluggish Chakras. Chakra cleansing is often done laying down flat on your back in a comfortable and relaxing way. Using the Pendulum start at the Crown Chakra, located just above the head. Hold your pendulum 6 – 12 inches over the energy centre.
